Gardai have issued a stern warning to dog owners - as the arrival of spring sees the risk of 'sheep bothering' increasing.
February-April runs as lambing and calving season for a large portion of farmers.
This can be a stressful period, understandably, so any distractions or worries that can be sorted out are a big issue.
To help, Gardai have reminded dog owners to keep their animals secured and under control if near a farm.
Officers in Kilkenny, Wicklow, Carlow, Laois and Offaly have all warned the public to be alert.
A spokesperson said: "As we enter the lambing season we want to remind dog owners of the harm their pets can cause if let roam free or unsecured and not kept under effectual control.
"This time of year onwards we see issues with sheep kills when dogs attack livestock. Dogs should not be allowed roam.
"It is the owners responsibility to have their dog under effectual control at all times. Secure your dog, have it microchipped and registered with your vet.
"If your dog attacks farm animals or livestock, the owner can be held liable for the damages and face prosecution. The owner of the farm animal or livestock is also within their right to shoot any animal that is worrying their animals.
"The 'Control of Dogs Act 1986' sets out offences and penalties which can result in a one month prison sentence and/or €600 fine.
"Please keep dogs under control."
