The man who died in a fatal road traffic collision on Achill island yesterday has been named locally as Alan Callaghan.
The Newport native, in his 40s, had been visiting Ireland from the US when he was hit by a vehicle at Doonagh in the early hours of Monday morning.
The tragedy has led to an outpouring of sorrow and loss among the community, according to local reports, and the funeral arrangements will be announced later today.

Members of the West Mayo Municipal District held a minute's silence at their meeting in Belmullet yesterday as a mark of respect to the victim.
Gardaí launched an appeal for witnesses on Monday and, in a statement said: "Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision at Dooagh in Keel, Achill, Co. Mayo, this morning, Monday 25th July 2022."
The statement continues: "The collision occurred at approximately 3:15 am and involved a car and a pedestrian.
"The pedestrian, a man aged in his 40s was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body has been removed to Mayo University Hospital.
"There were no other injuries reported. The scene is currently preserved for Forensic Collision Investigators."
