Gardai charge teen in relation to serious assault at Electric Picnic that left man hospitalised

Gardaí have charged a teenage boy with the serious assault of a man in his 30s at Electric Picnic.

He was arrested on Wednesday morning, and taken to Portlaoise Garda station where he was detained.

A short time later he was charged and released on bail, but is due to appear before Portlaoise District Court on Thursday morning, October 27.

In an update this evening, a garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí in Portlaoise have charged a male, aged in his late teens in relation to the investigation of the serious assault that occurred at Electric Picnic Festival, Stradbally, Co. Laois on Friday 2nd September 2022.

“The man was arrested yesterday morning Wednesday 5th October 2022 and taken to Portlaoise Garda station where he was detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

“He was charged last night and released on bail to appear before Portlaoise District Court on Thursday 27th October 2022 at 10.30a.m.”

The assault occurred on Friday, September 2 between 10 pm and midnight in the Today FM Sound Garden at Electric Picnic.

DJ Jamie Maguire was playing at the time and the assault is alleged to have happened during the last song of his set.

The victim, aged in his 30s, was taken to Tullamore Hospital and later transferred to St James’s Hospital in Dublin.

He was said to have serious injuries that were not life-threatening.

After confirming Wednesday’s arrest, gardai said Investigations are ongoing.
