A motorist is in hot water after being caught by gardai breaking multiple laws.
Officers from the Dundalk Roads Policing Unit were on patrol on the M1 motorway recently when they caught a vehicle driving at 172km/hr - more than 50km/h over the speed limit.
Things went from bad to worse for the driver after they were pulled over by gardai, who found they were a novice with no N plates displayed.
The car also had ‘non conforming registration plates’ - a little-known law that carries a fine of up to €5,000.
Prosecutions will now follow for the driver.
Posting about the incident on Twitter, a Garda spokesperson said: “Dundalk Roads Policing unit detected the driver of this vehicle recently driving at 172km/hr on the M1.
“On stopping the vehicle it was discovered the driver was a novice driver with no N plates displayed and had non conforming registration plates.
“Prosecution to follow.”
It follows a busy bank holiday weekend for gardai, who were out in force conducting checkpoints. The checkpoints focused on intoxicated driving offences, drug detections, speed offences and other road traffic legislation.
A Mandatory Intoxicant Testing checkpoint on the Naas road this morning saw all drivers who were stopped pass.
Another which took place in Co Louth on Friday saw four motorists arrested for drink and drugs driving offences, as well as three vehicles seized for no insurance.
