Gardai appeal for witnesses following discovery of body in Drumcondra

Gardai are appealing for witnesses following the discovery of a young man's body in Drumcondra.

Sean McCarthy, 28 years-old from Ballymun, was found dead on Saturday evening in an apartment on Achill Road. Gardai are investigating "all circumstances" following the grim discovery.

A man in his 30s was arrested in connection to the discovery and is being detained at a garda station in north Dublin. Gardai are appealing to anyone that was in the Home Farm area of Drumcondra between Tuesday and Saturday to contact them.

A garda spokesman said: "Gardai at Ballymun continue to investigate all of the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in his late 20s whose body was discovered on the evening of Saturday, 6th August, 2022, at an apartment on Achill Road, Drumcondra, Dublin 9.

"On the afternoon of Sunday, 7th August, 2022, the body was removed from the scene and taken to Dublin City Mortuary where a post-mortem examination was conducted by State Pathologist Sally Anne Collis, the results of which are not being released for operational reasons.

"An incident room has been established at Ballymun Garda Station and a murder investigation has commenced under a Senior Investigating Officer.

"A Family Liaison Officer has been appointed and continues to keep the family informed of this investigation. The apartment on Achill Road, Drumcondra remains preserved for technical examination.

He added: "The man in his 30s arrested as part of this investigation is still being detained at a Garda Station in North Dublin under the provisions of Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007.

"Gardaí are appealing for any persons who were travelling in the Home Farm Road area of Drumcondra and its’ environs between the morning of Tuesday, 2nd August, 2022, and the evening of Saturday, 6th August, 2022, who observed any activity which drew their attention, to come forward."

Anyone with any information that may assist Gardaí with this investigation is asked to contact Ballymun Garda Station on 01 666 4400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

Gardai believe the young man was lured to an apartment and shot dead over a drug debt. It is feared that he could have lain dead at the apartment for several days before being discovered.
