Ganesh Chaturthi 2026: How to do Ganpati Sthapana at home? Check puja vidhi and samagri list

Every year, Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with much fanfare across India.

This year, Chaturthi Tithi will begin at 7:06 AM on September 14 and end at 7:44 AM on September 15. For New Delhi, the Madhyahna Ganesh Puja Muhurat will be from 11:02 AM to 1:31 PM.

Families bringing Ganpati home for the first time need not complicate the puja. A clean place, simple offerings and sincere devotion are enough.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2026: List of Samagri

Before the Sthapana Muhurat, keep all the puja items ready.

You will need a Ganesh idol, preferably made of clay, along with a wooden chowki or clean platform. Cover the chowki with a fresh red or yellow cloth.

You can also keep a Kalash filled with clean water. Other puja items include roli, haldi, kumkum, akshat, Durva grass, red flowers and a flower garland.

For bhog, keep coconut, seasonal fruits, modak or laddoo. Betel leaves, betel nuts and Janeu can also be included.

For Panchamrit, keep milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar ready.

You will also need a diya, ghee or oil, cotton wicks, incense sticks, camphor and Dakshina.

The most common offerings to Lord Ganesha include Durva grass, flowers, modak and laddoo.

Set up the place for Ganpati

Keep the area where Ganpati Bappa will be placed during Ganeshotsav clean and ready before the Sthapana.

Place a wooden chowki or clean platform at the chosen spot and cover it with a fresh red or yellow cloth.

Position the Ganesh idol at a height that makes it convenient to perform the daily puja.

Flowers, diyas, lights and simple festive decorations can be used to decorate the space.

Start with Sankalpa

Light a diya in front of Ganapati.

Take a little water, flowers or akshat in your hand and make a Sankalpa to worship Lord Ganesha with devotion and faith for the number of days you intend to keep the idol at home.

Deep Prajwalan and Sankalpa are typically performed before the main Ganesh Chaturthi puja.

Perform Avahana and Sthapana

Perform Avahana to invite Lord Ganesha into your home.

After this, place the idol on the prepared chowki and begin the Sthapana puja.

Traditional Ganesh Puja can include offerings such as Asana, Padya, Arghya, Snana, Vastra, Gandha, Pushpa, Dhupa, Deepa and Naivedya.

Families unfamiliar with the full Sanskrit puja procedure can follow a simple form of worship.

Offer flowers and prayers and chant “Om Gan Ganapataye Namah” with devotion.

Offer flowers, Durva and modak

Apply tilak to Lord Ganesha and offer akshat, fresh flowers and Durva grass.

Offer modak or laddoo as bhog. Coconut and fruits can also be offered to Ganpati Bappa.

Perform Ganesh Aarti

After the offerings, perform Ganesh Aarti.

Devotees may also recite Ganapati Atharvashirsha, Ganesh Chalisa or any Ganesha stotra traditionally followed by their family.

Continue daily puja until Visarjan

Keep the puja area clean after Ganpati Sthapana.

If possible, perform aarti every morning and evening. Offer fresh flowers, Durva, fruits or sweets according to your family tradition.

Ganpati can be kept at home for one and a half days, three days, five days, seven days or until Anant Chaturdashi, depending on the family tradition.

Ganesh Visarjan 2026 date

Ganesh Visarjan will be observed on Anant Chaturdashi, September 25, 2026.

Ganpati Sthapana at home does not have to be complicated. To perform the puja with devotion, a clean place, sincere Sankalpa, Durva, flowers, bhog, mantra and aarti are enough.
