Gamers have condemned Diablo 4 as “completely broken” after its servers went down yesterday.
The servers of the fantasy game were hit with a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack yesterday, disconnecting players from the game. DDoS are a form of cyber attack where a system is flooded with requests and leaving the online servers unable to operate.
While DDoS attacks are fairly common on multiplayer titles and most are now able to access the game again, many players have criticised developers Blizzard for making the game ‘always online’. This means the game has to be connected to the internet to work, even if you want to play single player.

Those who were unable to access the game took to Twitter to voice their dismay at this. One frustrated player said: “Diablo 4 is easily one of the best games I’ve played in a long time. But god damn, it did not need to be online only when I was playing solo.”
They added: “I lost a lot of runs from random server issues. Amazing game, but bad decision there in my opinion.”
Another argued it was “ridiculous” to have the game always online and said: “These outages, just confirm how irrational this is. The product is currently broken.”
Another player said: “It frustrates me to no end. I want to play Diablo 4 by myself, I have no interest in its multiplayer component. Yet here I am, on a Sunday, not being able to play because of server issues.”
When Diablo’s lead designer Joe Shely why the game would be online only prior to its release, he argued that the function would be the “best way” to get the most out of the game. He said: “There's a large, seamless, connected, and shared space in the world, going down into dungeons, being able to group with your friends, trading and PvP. We feel that the best way to experience that is in a world that is online."
This controversy comes after the game’s battle pass plans were recently criticised as “brutal”. Diablo 4 is available to buy now on all platforms.
