Galway motorist caught driving outrageously over the speed limit on Garda National Slow Down Day

A motorist in Galway was caught going more than twice the legal speed limit on a day dedicated to speed compliance across the country.

The vehicle was snapped travelling at 117km/h in a 50km/h zone on the N6 at Baile An Phoill in Galway, as part of An Garda Síochána's National Slow Down Day.

During the 24 hour period of National Slow Down Day between February 28, 7am to March 1, 7am, GoSafe checked the speed of 173,811 vehicles across the country.

In that space of time, the operator detected 628 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.

One motorist in Dublin was caught travelling at 122km/h in a 80km/h Zone on the N4 Doddsborough in Lucan, Dublin.

A motorist on the N4 Drishoge Carrick-On-Shannon Roscommon was found speeding at 92km/h in a 60km/h zone, while another on the Monaghan Road Castleblayney in Monaghan was clocked at the same speed of 92km/h in a 60km/h zone.

In Cork, GoSafe detected a road user travelling at 159km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N25 Ballyadam in, Carrigtwohill, while in neighbouring county Limerick, a vehicle was found travelling at 115km/h in a 80km/h zone on the R513 Herbertstown.

Some other notable detections mentioned by gardaí were:

- 139km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N24 Woodrooff Clonmel Tipperary

- 153km/h in a 120km/h zone on the M6 An Carn Mór Thiar Órán Mór Gaillimh

- 113km/h in a 80km/h zone on the R445 Greatheath Portlaoise Laois

- 126km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N21 Tooreenmore Knocknagoshel Kerry

The initiative, operated by the gardaí in conjunction with the Road Safety Authority, highlights the dangers of speeding and hopes to deter future motorists from speeding in a bid to lead to less road traffic accidents on Irish roads.

A spokesperson said: "An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to drivers to comply with speed limits in order to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads."
