A young camogie player who died tragically after suffering a fatal head injury during a collision while playing a match will be laid to rest on Friday.
Kate Moran, 20, will be reposing at her home in Monivea, Co. Galway on Thursday from 4pm to 8pm before being taken to the Church of The Sacred Heart in Ryehill on Friday morning for funeral mass at 1pm.
The talented Athenry player will be then be buried in Templemoyle Cemetery, Newcastle, Athenry.
Kate had been playing camogie for Athenry against Ardrahan on Easter Monday before the match was abandoned, and she was taken to University Hospital Galway by ambulance. She remained in intensive care overnight but passed away on Tuesday.
A funeral notice on RIP.ie read: "Kate Moran, Glenagloughan, Monivea, Co.Galway. 19th April 2022. Sadly missed by her loving family, parents Cathal and Mary, siblings Thady, Leah and Saoirse, her loving boyfriend TJ Brennan, grandmothers Bridie Moran and Amelia Murphy, aunts, uncles, relatives, extended family, neighbours and friends.
"Reposing from her home in Monivea H65FE04 on Thursday, 21st April, from 4pm to 8pm. Arriving at the Church of The Sacred Heart, Ryehill, Monivea H65YE18 on Friday for Funeral Mass at 1pm. Paying tribute, Marty Morrissey told RTE Radio 1's Morning Ireland that Kate was a "brilliant camogie player" whose family are steeped in GAA.
He said: "Our deepest sympathies go to Kate Moran's family. Cathal [Kate's dad] was part of the Athenry team that won the All-Ireland Club Championship in 1997, 2000 and 2001. Kate was a brilliant camogie player. She won two All-Ireland U16 medals.
"Our deepest sympathies to her brother Thady and her sisters Leah and Saoirse following this accidental collision in a camogie match in Ardrahan. And our hearts go out to everyone in Athenry - all the community - because they will be heartbroken over this very unfortunate accident, and we pass on our sympathies to the Moran family."
Kate is believed to have initially walked away from the accidental on-pitch collision before collapsing and losing consciousness.
Emergency services rushed to Ardrahan in south Co Galway after the accident. It is understood Kate and another player went up for a ball at the same time, and the backswing of a hurl struck her head.
Athenry Camogie Club paid tribute to the player. It said: "Today we learned of the death of our dear club-mate, Kate Moran.
"This is a terrible tragedy for her family, our club and our community. We are deeply saddened by these events. Our sympathy and thoughts are with the Moran family and friends. Kate will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
"Kate began playing with Athenry Camogie Club at underage level and quickly progressed to Senior A level with great distinction. She holds a Féile, Minor County and Intermediate County title. She played in a club All-Ireland Intermediate final.
"She won two All-Irelands at U16 level with Galway, both titles she was incredibly proud of. She was a tremendous role model for our many underage players and a wonderful leader both on and off the field of play. Her bubbly personality will be remembered for eternity."
