An early Mario Lemina goal gave Galatasaray a slender win in their Champions League round of 16 first-leg clash against Liverpool.
Liverpool started strong at Rams Park but found themselves behind within seven minutes, Mario Lemina arriving unmarked to power in from Victor Osimhen’s header.
And the Reds they found themselves lucky to only be one down at half-time, Giorgi Mamardashvili making a great save from Davinson Sanchez and Osimhen. Nevertheless, the visitors were themselves unlucky not to score in a chaotic first half, Florian Wirtz twice going close.
But while the Reds started the second half as the better of the two sides, it was Galatasaray who though they’d extended their lead, Osimhen bundling in before it was chalked off for offside on Yilmaz.
And while it was not long before Liverpool had an equaliser ruled out themselves – Konate penalised for a handball before he scored – the visitors were unable to fight their way back into it, Galatasaray going close on a couple of occasions before the final whistle as they wrapped up a result that leaves Liverpool with plenty to do in next week’s second leg at Anfield.

A remarkable few minutes there as the goal was subject to a lengthy review. In the meantime, Wirtz made way for Cody Gakpo.
The ball for the ‘goal’ actually hit Konate on the hand, and in the end it looks like the correct decision.

DISALLOWED GOAL! Liverpool are so, so lucky here!
The hosts have the ball in the net after a mix-up in defence leads to Osimhen tapping in, but it turns out that Yilmaz was in an offside position in the build-up.
He was trying to play the ball from an offside position, so the call was the right one.

A bit of scrappy play from both sides since that Szoboszlai chance, with Mac Allister now penalised for fouing Sara.
Liverpool make the first subs of the day, Andy Robertson and Jeremie Frimpong coming on for Kerkez and Salah.

Still a very end-to-end game this one, with Szoboszlai the latest to try and test Cakir as space opens up before him and he tries to curl one into the far corner. No dice this time though.

18:49 , Chris WilsonBoth sides are out of the tunnel again so we’ll be back underway soon!
HALF-TIME! Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool
18:45 , Chris WilsonThere’s still so much time to go in this tie but Liverpool will want to take a result back to Anfield, and they need to click in attack if they want to do that.
They haven’t necessarily played badly so far this evening but they’ve been lacklustre in defence at key times and could arguably deem themselves lucky not to be trailing by more.
However, at the same time they probably should have scored themselves, Wirtz missing a couple of good chances before a couple of promising attacks fell apart due to a lack of invention.
HALF-TIME! Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool
18:40 , Chris Wilson

HALF-TIME! Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool
18:35 , Chris WilsonJust the two minutes of added time and the referee blows the whistle for the end of the first half!
A chaotic first half at Rams Park saw the hosts go ahead early on before a frantic 40 or so minutes with chances for both sides!
It’s been an entertaining half for the neutral and both teams will probably feel like they should have scored more.
Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool
18:32 , Chris Wilson45 mins
Lovely feet from Ekitike as a superb touch takes him past one defender before he’s brought down. However, the referee waves away the calls for a free-kick.
Moments later, Szoboszlai is fouled t give Salah a dangerous crossing position, but van Dijk is penalised in the area.
Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool
18:29 , Chris Wilson44 mins
The home defence still looks very shaky at times, notably with a hospital pass to Cakir before Sanchez almost plays Ekitike clean through with a header backwards.
The visitors are not out of this by any stretch but they’ll need to string some better combinations together in attack.
Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool
18:28 , Chris Wilson42 mins
Half a chance for Wirtz as Ekitike swings in a cross and Kerkez heads it back across goal, but the German can’t get any power on the header.
At the other end, Lang cuts in and hits a shot from distance. It ricochets off Konate and is very close to running perfectly into the path of Osimhen, but it goes out for a corner.
Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool

Liverpool have had the lion’s share of possession over the last few minutes but a bit of miscommunication between van Dijk and Gravenberch almost gives the hosts an opening.

The free-kick comes to nothing but Liverpool almost make something of the counter, Salah’s cross in cut out at the last minute by the defender.
Liverpool have their first corner of the game – Cakir punches away and Wirtz sees his ball in cleared, but Gravenberch does well to win another free-kick, this one after an Osimhen foul.

Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool
18:16 , Chris Wilson30 mins
Galatasaray are still causing problems for the Liverpool defence but Konate does well to shepherd Sara off the ball and gives his teammates a break.
However, moments later the Frenchman misjudges a cross and fails to clear it! It falls to Osimhen in the area and he snatches at the effort, lashing it over the bar!

Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool
18:14 , Chris Wilson27 mins
Liverpool win a free-kick at the other end in a dangerous position, but the ball ends up rolling to Cakir.
At the other end, Yilmaz fizzes in a lovely early cross but it just evades Osimhen in the box before Jakobs wins a throw.
Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool
18:12 , Chris Wilson24 mins
CLOSE! This is a great save from Mamardashvili!
The cross comes in and Davinson Sanchez has a free header from the penalty spot.
He gets a clean connection and it looks like it’s flying into the corner but the Georgian ‘keeper makes a great stop, flying to his right to tip it past the post!
Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool
18:09 , Chris Wilson22 mins
CLOSE! Almost a very lucky second for the hosts as Lang sweeps in a cross that Mamardashvili sees late, though he does well to get an arm to it and claw it away for a corner.
Liverpool try and mount a counter from the set-piece but Mac Allister ends up conceding a foul.
Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool
18:07 , Chris Wilson19 mins
Liverpool have certainly settled now, and they look like they’ll cause the home defence problems, but Galatasaray clearly have plenty of ability in attack themselves, even if their defence looks shaky.
A long ball comes forward to Osimhen and he beats the ‘keeper to it but can’t keep the ball in play.

Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool
18:05 , Chris Wilson16 mins
CLOSE! A well-worked move for Liverpool almost sees them get level!
They work the ball from Salah on the right and he squares it across to Mac Allister, who’s only a few yards out in a central position. However, he chooses to lay it off to Wirtz rather than shoot, and the German can only sting the palms of Cakir!
Galatasaray 1-0 Liverpool

CLOSE! Liverpool need to be careful here!
It’s another chance for the hosts – with Osimhen nearly unmarked as he rises to meet Jakobs’ cross – but he puts the header wide!

The hosts really have their tails up now, with Yilmaz unable to make the most of an Osimhen through ball.

GOAL! The hosts are ahead!
It all comes from a corner, Osimhen heading the ball back towards goal and Mario Lemina arriving unmarked to head past Mamardashvili!

The first meaningful Galatasaray attack sees Konate caught out on the wing. Lang is in behind the defence but he sees his cross put behind for a corner.

Liverpool have been totally dominant so far, though Noa Lang does well to finally keep a bit of possession for the hosts after they’d given it away cheaply yet again.
Galatasaray 0-0 Liverpool

CLOSE! A great early chance for Liverpool!
Wirtz will probably feel he should have scored there.
It all stems from a loose pass from the defender and Wirtz latches onto it. He spots the ‘keeper off his line and tries to place an effort from distance, but it goes wide!
Galatasaray 0-0 Liverpool

A quick start from Liverpool on the front foot, though a chance goes begging when Salah can’t keep it in.

Slot: 'You can feel what it means'
17:30 , Chris WilsonHere’s what Arne Slot has to say ahead of kick-off at Rams Park:
“You can feel what it means to these fans, a game like tonight, and the good thing is we’ve experienced it already.
“Even for very experienced players the first experience was new, playing over here, but now it’s the second time, so I hope that’s going to help us.
“The other things is that we’re playing a game at Anfield as well, where our fans will show what support means to them,” he added.
Match stats
17:25 , Chris WilsonDominik Szoboszlai has been directly involved in eight goals in the UEFA Champions League this term (4 goals, 4 assists), more than any other Liverpool player. The only central midfielder with more in a single edition for the Reds is Steven Gerrard, who notched 10 in 2007/08 (6 goals, 4 assists).
Meanwhile, Mo Salah could overtake Jamie Carragher to become Liverpool’s record appearance maker in the European Cup/Champions League (both on 80 games ahead of kick-off). The Egyptian is also just one goal away from becoming the first African player to reach 50 in the European Cup/Champions League.

The Champions League has eroded the soul of European football – here’s how to fix it
17:15 , Chris WilsonWhen the draw for the Champions League last 16 was made, there were at least a few Uefa figures who winced. That was because they were anticipating reactions like that of Pep Guardiola, who rightly said it was “a little bit weird” that Manchester City and Real Madrid were facing each other for the fifth consecutive season and sixth occasion in seven years. Some in Uefa counter that comes from the clear logic of the new seeding system, that the clubs voted for.
But what else is likely to happen when it’s mostly the same teams all the time? And now, increasingly, when it’s teams from the same country all the time?
England has six clubs in the Champions League last 16, which is obviously unprecedented. High-level Uefa sources would privately admit such a situation - from any country - is also undesirable. The greater issue is that the very structuring of European football makes it more likely to happen, not less.

When is Galatasaray vs Liverpool?
17:10 , Chris WilsonWe’re only just over 30 minutes away from kick-off, so here’s a reminder of how you can watch this evening’s game...

Match stats
17:00 , Chris WilsonLiverpool have lost four of their last five matches in the knockout stages of the Champions League, although the one game they did avoid defeat in was Arne Slot’s only away match in the knockout stages in charge of the Reds: 1-0 at Paris SG in last season’s round of 16.
In terms of starting XI average age, Galatasaray are the oldest side remaining in this season’s Champions League (28y 273d); overall, they rank 33rd out of the 36 teams in this edition.
More from Slot
16:50 , Chris WilsonHere’s more from Slot on the challenge posed by Galatasaray and playing at Rams Park:
“They have a very good team and we have a very good team. So are you happy to play against them? No, there's not one team which you prefer to play in the last 16 because they are all very good teams – including Galatasaray,” said the Dutchman.
“We've already lost against them, so that tells you how difficult of a game it is for us. The good thing now is that we play two games.
“Where in the group stage you only play away against Galatasaray. Now we also have a chance to play in front of our own fans, which will be impressive for Galatasaray,” he explained.
“These fans over here are very impressive, we've noticed that when we've played here. The good thing is we've experienced it already once now. That's maybe a positive thing,” he added.
Team news
16:45 , Chris WilsonFor the hosts, manager Okan Buruk makes two changes to the side that beat Besiktas in the league last week. Roland Sallai is replaced by Wilfried Singo in defence, while Noa Lang comes in on the wing in place of Leroy Sane.
Team news
16:41 , Chris WilsonArne Slot has made five changes to the side that beat Wolves in the FA Cup at the weekend. The change in goal is forced on him as Alisson makes way for Giorgi Mamardashvili, while in defence Andy Robertson is replaced by Milos Kerkez and Curtis Jones comes out for Ibrahima Konate.
The other two changes are both in the forward line, where Florian Wirtz takes the place of Cody Gakpo and Rio Ngumoha drops out in favour of Hugo Ekitike.

Team news
16:25 , Chris WilsonLine-ups should be released in the next five minutes or so, so here’s a reminder of the early team news for both sides...
For Liverpool, there are no new injury concerns after the win over Wolves, though Alisson will be sidelined after suffering discomfort following the club’s open training session on Monday. In addition, Federico Chiesa was not present in training and will not be in the squad.
Alexander Isak is still a few weeks away from making a return, while Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni and Wataru Endo remain sidelined for the foreseeable future.
For Galatasaray, young reserve goalkeeper Enes Buyuk is the only absentee, while Leroy Sane is available to feature despite being red carded at the weekend. Star man Victor Osimhen will likely lead the attack, supported by Baris Alper Yilmaz.
Match stats
16:20 , Chris WilsonLiverpool have never won in three previous away games at Galatasaray in the Champions League, only visiting Chelsea more times without ever winning in the competition.
Galatasaray have only lost two of their 22 home matches in the knockout stages of the European Cup/Champions League, and are unbeaten in their last 10 since a defeat to Atletico Madrid in the first round in October 1973.
Slot on Galatasaray
16:10 , Chris WilsonAfter playing them, we know them better. And now before playing them, you start to watch even more games,” said Liverpool boss Arne Slot on preparing for today’s game.
“I have a lot of respect for Galatasaray, for their manager. He's been so successful here as a player and now as a manager, won so much with this club. Recently they played Besiktas – who have one of my former players, Orkun Kokcu, who I know is a very good player as well – but they are even able to beat Besiktas with 10 men, so that tells you a lot about how the team is fighting, if that is necessary,” he explained.
“So, they have quality players that can fight and they have great fans behind them. We need to be so, so, so good tomorrow to bring a result back to Anfield and that's what we're going to try.
“Last time when we played them there was not a lot between us and them. We both got a penalty, unfortunately ours was overturned by the VAR and theirs was given.
“And in open play I think we were quite similar, a 50-50 game that we lost because of that penalty. Two very good teams playing against each other tomorrow evening,” he added.

Head-to-head
16:00 , Chris WilsonThese two teams have met five times in the past in this competition, with Galatasaray winning two, Liverpool winning just one and the other two ending as draws.
Earlier this season, the Turkish side ran out 1-0 winners at Rams Park thanks to a penalty from Victor Osimhen, though their only other win against the Reds came on matchday six of the 2006/07 competition, when they won 3-2 thanks to a late goal from Saša Ilić.
Liverpool’s only victory in this fixture also came in 2006/07, when they beat the Turkish side 3-2 at Anfield thanks to a brace from Peter Crouch.

Match stats
15:50 , Chris WilsonGalatasaray have only lost one of their last nine home games against English clubs in all European competition, going down 1-4 to Arsenal in December 2014. They have already beaten Liverpool 1-0 at home in this season's competition.
Liverpool have won just one of five previous Champions League meetings with Galatasaray, a win rate of 20 per cent - their joint-lowest against any side they have faced 5+ times in the competition (also 20 per cent against Chelsea).

“We have a team who can win the Champions League though I'm pretty sure this game is going to be tough."

Arne Slot on Alisson injury
15:30 , Jack Rathborn"Ali, of course, was in the session as many people could see, but unfortunately he felt something towards the end of the session," Slot said.
"People looked at it and we decided, and he decided together, that it wasn't good enough to play tomorrow. And then it's of no use travelling."
"There's definitely a chance [he could face Spurs on Sunday], yes, because we don't expect it to be a big thing," added the Dutchman.
"But it was too much to be available for tomorrow."

Andy Robertson reveals Spurs snub to stay at Liverpool
15:10 , Jack RathbornAndy Robertson has revealed that he wanted to stay at Liverpool after holding talks with Tottenham in January.
Spurs made a surprise approach for the Liverpool vice-captain, who is in the final months of his contract at Anfield, in the winter transfer window and the Premier League champions considered it out of respect for the left-back.
But while Liverpool changed their minds and decided they could not allow Robertson to leave, the Scotland skipper, who underlined his commitment to the club, was adamant he did not want to go.

14:30 , Jack RathbornLiverpool will be without key goalkeeper Alisson Becker for their Champions League last-16 first leg against Galatasaray in Istanbul, after the Brazil international sustained an injury during training.
The setback means the Reds' first-choice stopper did not travel with the squad, marking another blow in a season already hampered by fitness issues.
Alisson reportedly experienced minor discomfort following Monday morning's session at the AXA Training Centre, prompting a decision to avoid any further risk. He has already missed nine matches this season through injury.

The unanswered Liverpool question that will define Arne Slot’s reign
13:46 , Richard Jolly, Senior Football CorrespondentArne Slot’s critics in the Liverpool fanbase may suggest he shouldn’t bring up this club landmark, but history indicates not doing so would have been a greater surprise. The Dutchman reaches a century of games in charge of the Reds. Only three of his supposedly permanent predecessors did not, and even then, one of them, Kenny Dalglish, had already done so in his first spell at the helm. It leaves only Roy Hodgson and the long-forgotten secretary-manager George Patterson who did not enter the hundred club. Read more below:
