Gabriel Magalhaes in Twitter fury as Dan Burn decision irks Arsenal man after Newcastle draw

Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes took a swipe at referee Andrew Madley on social media after being denied a penalty in the 0-0 draw with Newcastle. The Brazilian appeared to aim a not-so-subtle dig at the official and VAR on Twitter in the early hours of Wednesday morning, posting a video of match footage showing Dan Burn pulling him down in the Newcastle penalty area.

The incident was reviewed by VAR who deemed no foul had taken place during the Arsenal free-kick, leaving Gunners boss Mikel Arteta fuming on the touchline. Burn had a handful of Gabriel's shirt as he hit the turf, with some believing the Newcastle man was lucky to avoid punishment.

Arteta was also left incensed after Arsenal were denied another penalty in the final moments of added time. Granit Xhaka's cross struck the arm of Jacob Murphy but VAR deemed the winger's arm was in a natural position

"They are two penalties, it's very simple," the Arsenal manager insisted to Sky Sports. "I'm talking about what I've seen, now, and it's two scandalous penalties."

Arteta wasn't alone in thinking Burn should have penalised for his tangle with Gabriel, as Sky pundit Paul Merson explained why he thought Newcastle had gotten away with one.

"Stonewall. In my opinion it’s stonewall, he’s got a complete and utter grab of his shirt," Merson said at full-time. "His fist is clenched as well, and he is properly pulling that back.

"That’s a foul anywhere else on the football pitch, look at that. We’ve seen two or three people getting booked tonight for stopping people running away from the ball, for me it’s stonewall."

Howe and Arteta clashed on the touchline at full-time as tensions boiled over after a feisty game. Referee Madley was accused of losing control of the Premier League tie as he dished out nine yellow cards in total.
