Gabby Agbonlahor makes 'strange' claim about Liverpool signing Cody Gakpo

Former Premier League striker Gabby Agbonlahor believes there is something “strange” about Liverpool’s move for Cody Gakpo.

The Reds have confirmed they have agreed a deal to sign the forward from PSV Eindhoven. The news was announced on Wednesday night, with Gakpo signing a contract that will run until 2028.

Liverpool will pay an initial £37million to PSV for the signing of Gakpo, with the deal going above £40m with future add-ons. He will officially become a member of Jurgen Klopp ’s squad when the transfer window opens on January 1.

One pundit who has seemingly questioned a certain part of the deal is Agbonlahor. The former Aston Villa striker has admitted that he was surprised by the fee that Liverpool are paying to sign Gakpo.

“Why is it so low though, the fee?” Agbonlahor said on talkSPORT. “It’s strange now to say that £37 million is low. Are we missing something? You would think it would be more.

“I like watching him. I was watching him and I was like ‘he’s a big guy as well’. He’s strong at running with the ball. Aggressive. He can score a goal as well.

“When you look at Liverpool, they had to buy someone in January. I think the Liverpool ownership and management would have looked at the squad and thought. Nunez is a decent player, he needs a season to get into it and is a bit rusty in front of goal, but he will come good.

“Salah is Mr Reliable. But to have Jota and Diaz out injured, they might come back, but they might also get injured again, so who is your next one? Firmino has had injury problems.”
