Gabby Agbonlahor makes Leeds United 'turning point' claim after West Ham win

Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has praised Leeds United’s performance against West Ham and expects it to be a turning point.

Leeds United are still missing key players such as Patrick Bamford and Kalvin Phillips, which meant they headed to the London Stadium at the weekend with a bench occupied primarily by youngsters.

Regardless, the Whites defied the odds and, with league debuts for 19-year-old Lewis Bate and 18-year-old Le Hjelde, beat West Ham 3-2.

Speaking to the website Football Insider, Agbonlahor said he had been worried about Leeds United’s Premier League survival but having watched the match expects them to be fine.

He told Football Insider : “Leeds were very impressive at the weekend. The way they dismantled West Ham with a very inexperienced team you have to hold your hands up and say, ‘You know what, great performance’.

“They are the only team that hasn’t complained and called off games. They could have had the game against West Ham called off easily but they didn’t. They played young players and had a bench full of kids.”

Leeds United’s matches against Liverpool and Aston Villa were called off after the Whites were unable to field enough first-team players.

However, Agbonlahor continued: “I think it’s definitely a turning point for Leeds. Once they get some players back as well they will be fine.

“I was quite worried about them but after that performance, they’ll be fine.”

Leeds’ next match will be at Elland Road against Newcastle United on Saturday.
