GAA legend Davy Fitzgerald opens up on difference being a father in his 50s and first time around in 20s

GAA legend Davy Fitzgerald has opened up about becoming a dad again at the age of 51.

He and wife Sharon O’Loughlin welcomed Daithi Og in April 2022 but didn’t announce the news until October.

Davy is already dad to a 25-year-old son, Colm, from his previous marriage to Ciara Flynn.

He said: “I think it took me a bit of a while to adjust to what being a parent is about.

“Daithi Og came along last April and he’s absolutely incredible. Being honest, it’s one of the best things that has ever happened.

“We’re both delighted to have him.”

Appearing on Friday’s Late Late Show, he added: “I like to think I’m a small bit more mature now.

“Back then, I was gone seven nights a week and you’re constantly on the go. I’m still busy, but I appreciate it way more. I’m a lot more aware of stuff that is happening than I would have been when I was younger,” he said.

Davy also spoke about the return of Davy’s Toughest Team as he mentors a group of young men who are facing some difficulties.

He said: “The thing we’re trying to say to lads is, when the road gets tough, you will get through it.”
