The United States informed the Group of Seven foreign ministers about last-minute information received from Israel regarding a drone action in Iran during a meeting chaired by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. The U.S. shared this information at a session that was altered to address the suspected attack.
Iran reportedly fired air defenses at a major air base and a nuclear site near Isfahan after detecting drones, believed to be part of an Israeli retaliation for Iran's recent drone-and-missile assault. The U.S. clarified that it had been informed by Israel about the drones but emphasized that it was not involved in any offensive operations.
In a joint communique, the G7 ministers urged all parties to prevent further escalation and expressed support for Israel's security. They strongly condemned Iran's recent attack on Israel and the seizure of a Portuguese-flagged vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. The ministers also warned Iran against transferring ballistic missiles and related technology to Russia.
Regarding the conflict in Gaza, the G7 called on Hamas to release hostages and reminded Israel to adhere to international humanitarian law. They opposed a full-scale military operation in Rafah due to potential catastrophic consequences on civilians and advocated for increased aid flow into Gaza.
The G7 emphasized working towards de-escalation, including reducing tensions, achieving a cease-fire, releasing hostages, and providing aid to the Palestinian people.
