Further snow to hit North East this weekend as Met Office extends yellow weather warning

The Met Office has issued a further yellow weather warning for snow and ice across the North East this weekend.

The warning is already in place for the region for Thursday and Friday but has been extended into the weekend when the region is set to be hit with further snowfall. The warning is in effect from 3pm on Saturday, March 11 until 6am on Sunday, March 12.

The Met Office said that the snow and ice has the potential to cause disruption from Saturday evening into Sunday morning and warned that drivers may face delays on roads. The public are also been warned to expect delays or cancellations on public transport, including buses and trains, as a result of the weather conditions.

Temperatures will remain very low on Saturday with highs of just 3C in Northumberland, dropping to 2C overnight and into Sunday morning.

Walkers and cyclists are being urged to take care as there is a chance of slips and falls on icy surfaces. The yellow warning also highlighted that there is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected.

Those heading out in the car this weekend should pack essential items including an ice scraper and de-icer, an in-car phone charger as well as food and drink in case of getting stuck in the cold and wintry weather, according to breakdown experts, the RAC.
