Funeral held for 12-year-old boy killed when car he was driving crashed in Limerick

The funeral for a 12-year-old schoolboy who was killed in a crash in Limerick took place on Thursday.

Wiktor Chojecki died when the car he was driving collided with a truck at 2am last Friday at Rineroe, just outside Adare village.

His funeral mass was held at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Newcastle West at 11.30am on Thursday followed by his burial at Calvary Cemetery.

Wiktor’s heartbroken parents, Ewa and Bartosz, were seen arriving at the church ahead of the service along with other mourners who carried his coffin.

The mass readings were read in both English and Polish and the service was celebrated by Canon Frank Duhig and Polish Chaplain Fr Krystof Tyburowski.

This comes days after a large crowd attended a colourful vigil where dozens of balloons were released into the sky.

Hundreds gathered in the town square in Newcastle West on Sunday afternoon for the vigil as they paid tribute to Wiktor who was a first-year secondary school student at Scoil Mhuire agus Ide in the town.

Following the crash, a shrine of floral tributes appeared along a stretch of the N21, on the Limerick side of Adare, where the collision took place.

Gardai said the boy was the only occupant of the car, and that the lorry driver was not injured.

Meanwhile, gardai are investigating the circumstances which led to the boy being behind the wheel of his family’s Nissan Qashqai in the early hours of the morning as well as the events that took place prior to the fatal tragedy.

They have made a public appeal for dash-cam footage from anyone who was travelling on the N21 near Adare at the time of the collision.

Gardai have asked anyone with information to contact Newcastle West Garda Station on 069 20650.
