Funeral details announced for dad Ian McDonnell who died trying to stop Clondalkin car robbery

Funeral details have been announced for tragic Roscommon man Ian McDonnell who died after attempting to stop a car robbery in Dublin.

The 50-year-old dad was run over while attempting to stop thugs from stealing his car on Robinhood Road, Clondalkin on January 23.

Ian was rushed to Tallaght University Hospital where he died on January 28.

He will be laid to rest on Tuesday in Caldra Cemetery (via Shankill Cross) following a funeral mass at 11.30am at St. Patrick’s Church, Elphin.

A notice on RIP.ie reads: "The death has occurred of Ian McDonnell of Galway Road, Roscommon and Elphin at Tallaght University Hospital.

"To the inexpressible grief of his heartbroken wife Monica (nee Beirne) and children Clodagh, Gareth and Aoife.

"Ian will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by his wife and children, sister Sandra McFadden (husband Keith), sisters-in-law Irene and her husband Andrew, Olga and her partner Richard, brother-in-law Adrian and his wife Tracy, aunts Breda, Monica and Laura, nieces and nephews, Joseph, Ciara, Colm, Rachel, Karen, Sara and Vanessa.

"He is also fondly remembered by his many close friends. Rest in Peace."

The whole Clondalkin community were left in shock by the Roscommon native's sudden death.

Local Independent Councillor William Joseph Carey said that the community was reeling from the horrific news and encouraged witnesses to come forward.

He said: "I was very sorry to hear of the awful death of Mr McDonnell while trying to stop a car thief stealing his property.

"Anyone with any information should contact the guards. I send my sympathies to his wife, children and extended family and friends who must be in shock of his untimely death.
