Fundraising campaign for teenager injured in quad bike accident near Kirkcudbright

A teenager suffered serious head injuries after a crash involving a quad bike near Kirkcudbright.

Callum McDougall was on the bike on the A711 near Mutehill on Saturday afternoon when the accident happened.

He was airlifted to Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he remains with mum Amy Woodrow at his bedside.

On Tuesday, pals set up a fundraiser to help support the family as Amy is self-employed and more than £2,800 was donated in the first 24 hours.

Nicola Watson, who set up the page with pal Susan Murdoch, said: “She hadn’t even thought about money so it’ll really help out. She’s coping, she is a strong young woman.

“After it happened I thought we needed to do something to help her as she is a lovely woman.

“They’re a popular family and they’re well known in the community. She’s a great mum.”

Callum lives in Dundrennan with his mum and sister Evie. He goes to Kirkcudbright Academy and was part of the Stewartry RFC under-16 squad which won the Scottish West Regional Plate.

He also helps out Susan and her partner Gordon Chisholm at the 3Rs Horse Rescue Centre at Kirkclaugh near Gatehouse and enjoys gamekeeping.

Following Saturday’s accident, which involved a red Honda quad bike, the A711 was shut for six hours to allow police to carry out investigations.

Inspector Greg Dinnie said: “A teenager has sustained serious injuries and it is important that we establish how this crash occurred.

“We are appealing for anyone who may have been driving in this area prior to the crash and may have seen a red coloured quad bike to come forward.

“You may also have been in the area and have dash-cam footage that can help us.

“Please check back and get in touch. Anyone with any information should contact police via 101, quoting incident number 1739 of July 2.”
