Fundraiser launched for Leixlip mum in 'life or death' situation in Gran Canaria

A fundraiser has been launched to help bring a ventilated Leixlip mum home from Gran Canaria.

Last week, Carmel Scott was on a sun holiday with her husband on the Canary island when she began to experience ongoing pain.

She visited a local clinic on Tuesday, April 5 and was administered IV medication for a kidney infection.

But unfortunately the situation deteriorated, and she was taken into ICU the following day in Hospital San Roque in Maspalomas, a private hospital in Gran Canaria.

Carmel, a former nurse, is currently ventilated, on IV antibiotics, IV hydrocortisone, IV omeprazole, dialysis and NG feeding.

She was diagnosed with sepsis originating from her kidney infection and disseminated intravascular coagulopathy from sepsis (DIC).

Carmel's kidneys came close to failing and a CT scan on Friday showed a stone obstructing her ureter.

Carmel's daughter Amy flew out to Gran Canaria on Thursday morning and set up a GoFundMe to fundraise for her mam's mounting medical bills.

Amy said the situation is a "matter of life or death" and that her family have already spent "over €35,000 upfront in medical costs and are running out of money fast".

In just two days, an incredible €32,000 has been fundraised for Carmel by family, friends and the Leixlip community.

Speaking to Dublin Live, Amy said her mam is a "remarkable person".

"She's one of those people that looks out for others, puts them before herself and makes you feel good about yourself.

"We are all so lost and devastated by this."

Amy said the goal is to get her mam back to Ireland to receive treatment here as soon as she is stable enough to fly.

"Preferably, it would happen when she's no longer ventilated and I've no idea when that'll be," she said.

"They are slowly but surely weaning her off the ventilator and sedation."

Amy said they are not receiving payment from their travel insurance company for Carmel's medical bills but their Irish health insurance, Laya Healthcare, are agreeing to cover part of the costs.

They have applied for an EHIC card which will help with costs once Carmel transfers to a public hospital but at the moment she is too unwell to be moved.

If you would like to help the Scott family, you can donate to their GoFundMe here.
