Fun-packed family activities announced in the run up to the Dundonald Highland Games

Organisers of the Dundonald Highland Games have revealed a list of family activities in the run up to the big day itself.

The 33rd Dundonald Highland Games will take place on Saturday, August 6 beneath the magnificent Dundonald Castle.

But in the days before the Games, there’s a bunch of activities on offer that will help mark the countdown to the annual showpiece.

A spokesperson for the organisers said: “We are delighted that our Highland Games is back and the bunting is up for the occasion. During July, we have lots of events that our community can get involved in.”

There is the scarecrow and window art competition, a family fun day, car treasure hunt, walking treasure hunt, kids’ fun run, kids’ pet show, 10k road race, adults football competition and fancy dress competition.

This year, to kick-off Games Week, Friends of Dundonald Castle will be hosting a fun and interactive event for all young history enthusiasts.

Go along to this free event and take part in a variety of experiences, including dress-up, mini jousting, medieval medicine-making, Roman and Medieval artefact handling, short castle tours and more.

There’s also plenty of space for a family picnic and you can top these up with a great food and drink selection in the visitor centre.

On the day of the Games, some of the many highlights will be the street procession at 12noon which includes the Games Queen, Brianne Burnett, and her attendants Lily McFarland and Kenna-Marie Easton.

This year will also see Lochie Roberts lead the street procession as Junior Chieftain.

And the day will also include a fancy dress competition, pipe band and drum majors contest, highland dancing competition, solo piping, heavy events, pram race, family traditional games, tug o’ war, stalls and entertainment.

A spokesperson said: “We are delighted to welcome back a large number of pipe bands, including the Highland Thistle Pipe Band from Argentina. We expect the pipe bands to prove as popular as ever and we look forward to meeting them all.

“Our Games will close in traditional fashion with a massed pipe bands parade through the village led by 2022 Chieftain Isabel McGuffie.”

Dundonald Games Society Chair Elaine McClure cannot wait for the big day.

She said: “It is great to have our Highland Games back where it belongs. We look forward to welcoming all our entrants and guests back to our games, which we hope will be fantastic for both competitors and spectators alike.

“It will be a pleasure to welcome all our pipe bands and highland dancers. Entry is free and there is free car parking and a shuttle bus available all day from Olympic Business Park.”
