Fuming Edinburgh mum says her daughter is kept up every night by noise

A fed up Edinburgh mum has hit out at the UPS depot at South Gyle industrial estate as its alarm has been going off for the past month in the middle of the night.

Rachel Sutherland says that her five-year-old daughter is unable to get any sleep due to the noise and that she is unable to function due to the lack of sleep the alarm is causing.

She adds that despite UPS making promises that the alarm would be fixed by Friday January 6, the problem has remained over the weekend.

On the issue, she said: “My flat backs on to the UPS depot and for around one month now the alarm has been going off from around 10:30pm until 02:30/03:00am! This is not acceptable at all.

“I have a five-year-old little girl who lives with me, who is being kept up at night due to the alarm constantly going off.

“I had gone into the depot and the manager seemed to never be around. I eventually got ahold of him on Thursday January 5 and he told me that they are aware of the issue.

“But this is due to me calling their call centres who have passed on the message to him. They said they had someone coming out on Friday to sort out the issue, so I went in to double check that it had been dealt with.

“The manager was not around again, shock! However his colleague told me that they definitely did not have someone out that day to sort out the alarms!

“This is absolutely not acceptable. I can’t sleep. I’m a working mum and unable to function without sleep as most people would be.

“My five year old is being kept up at night with the alarms and is then absolutely shattered during the day at school. Something needs to be done about this as soon as possible.”

Rachel says that she complained to the noise pollution team at the council but that they told her that they did not have any staff working nights and advised her to go an explore the situation herself.

She said: “I spoke to someone from Edinburgh City Council noise pollution team, who advised me that they don’t have anyone who works nights, and therefore I would have to work out where the problem is coming from myself and get back to them.

“This was slightly worrying that they were advising me to wander the streets at night to work out where an alarm is coming from.”

UPS were approached for comment on the issue.

Edinburgh council were also contacted regarding the alarm sounding through the night.
