Netflix shows Full Swing and Break Point have both been renewed for a second series.
The giant streaming platform produced docu-style shows focusing on the sports of golf and tennis following the success of F1's Drive to Survive. The former gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the PGA Tour, which provided a more in-depth look at some of its biggest stars including Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.
Meanwhile, tennis fans heard the stories behind players from both the ATP and WTA tours as they progressed throughout the 2022 season. Viewers were treated to a fly-on-the-wall look at the pressurised lives of the players such as Nick Kyrgios, Paula Badosa and Indian Wells champion Taylor Fritz.
Drive to Survive was a huge success as it helped increase F1’s popularity and appeal to different demographics. With the Full Swing and Break Point heading in the right following their first season, Netflix’s vice president of unscripted and documentary series Brandon Riegg is delighted the programs are set to continue.
“These shows quickly appealed to core fans of golf and tennis, and also recruited brand new fans from all around the world,” he told The Athletic. “Like so much of our growing sports slate, the compelling characters, competitive stakes, and vibrant storytelling reveal sides of the game you've never seen before, and we're excited to follow the unpredictable turns of the year ahead.”
Following Full Swing’s Netflix premiere on February 15, it landed in Netflix’s weekly global Top 10 English TV list. The second season will feature the same behind-the-scenes access but with a new crop of featured golfers.
“They were everywhere,” Tony Finau, a two-time PGA winner last season, said of the crew. “On off-weeks they were home with me. I felt like they did a lot of filming. “I knew when I said yes that that was a possibility. I told my wife. She was all-in; she didn’t mind it. It got to a point where it felt like they were just a fly on the wall."
Part 1 of Break Point, featuring five episodes, premiered in January, with Part 2 (episodes 6-10) to air this June. The show’s Executive producers Paul Martin and James Gay-Rees from Box to Box Films will continue to lead the show.
"Break Point showcases the passion, grit, and determination of tennis players at the highest level of competition. The show has provided an incredible window into our sport and we’re delighted to see it return for a second season," said ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi.
"Together with ATP Media, WTA and the four Grand Slams, we’re excited to partner with Netflix to build on the show’s success and bring captivating stories to audiences around the world.”
Following the blockbuster announcement, Netflix are set to host another sports docu-style series, this time for the NFL. Titled NFL World, reigning Super Bowl champion and MVP, Patrick Mahomes is set to headline a show covering the 2022 NFL season.
"I'm excited for fans to get an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at an unforgettable season for the entire Chiefs organisation and for my family," Mahomes said in a statement last month.
