When is the next full moon?
December's full moon, nicknamed the Cold Moon, rises on Thursday, Dec. 4. The moon turns full at precisely 6:14 p.m. ET on Thursday. However, the moon will also appear bright and full on Wednesday (Dec. 3) and Friday (Dec. 5), so make sure to look up all three night!
The full Cold Moon is the last of three consecutive supermoons, after October's Harvest Moon and November's Beaver Moon. Supermoons occur when the full moon rises near its closest point to Earth (or "perigee"). The moon travels on an elliptical orbit around our planet, with its exact distance from Earth changing each month.
The Cold Moon is also the highest full moon of the year.
