Fulham's Willian continues to make Roman Abramovich pay for costly £284m Chelsea transfer errors

Willian continues to expose the costly £284million worth of Chelsea transfer errors that Roman Abramovich made towards the latter stages of his ownership tenure.

The Brazilian has had a rough two years since being released by the West London club as a free agent after Marina Granovskaia could not justify offering him more than a two year extension with the player in question wanting three years. Consequently, Arsenal picked him up as a free agent and just like his most recent Corinthians move, the 34-year-old never really settled into life with those two sides and this allowed Fulham and Marco Silva to take another chance on the winger.

football.london understands that a return to London was always high on Willian's agenda, not just due to the fond memories his family hold of the English capital but also his investments made outside of football with the restaurant he co-owns with now Flamengo player and former Blues teammate David Luiz. Fulham's new number 20 has settled back into English football relatively well in 2021/22. He made a 30-minute cameo in the 2-1 loss to Tottenham a few weeks ago whilst he attained his first goal contribution of the campaign with his pinpoint cross which was met by the head of defender Tosin Adarabioyo at the City Ground.

The Lilywhites came away 3-2 victors from the East Midlands and a certain statistic, that surfaced after Willian's 54th minute corner, angered Chelsea fans and raised issues closer to home with the attacking issues Graham Potter has to now contend with and fix.

According to Squawka, Willian is now second (39) in the amount of Premier League assists Brazilian players have accumulated in the English top flight. He is currently 10 off Roberto Firmino at Liverpool (49) and one ahead of Aston Villa's Philippe Coutinho who himself is placed in 3rd place in this list (38).

What does this have to do with Chelsea? Well a section of their supporters took to social media to voice their anger at their current attackers/striker's who just haven't pulled their weight this season with Timo Werner (£25million) and Romelu Lukaku (£97.5m) themselves becoming discontent with the situation and therefore finding pastures new elsewhere.

The likes of Christian Pulisic (signed for £56m), Hakim Ziyech (£36m) and Kai Havertz (£70m) hadn't pulled their weight recently in the latter stages of the Thomas Tuchel era and now Potter has a huge job on his hands to get each of the attacking trio firing again in front of goal.

Chelsea fans were sure to make their voice heard. Here is how a few reacted on social media to this Willian statistic that surfaced after Friday nights Premier League fixtures.

@JasonNtez tweeted: 'Willian plays better than all our attackers. WAY better.'

@ChelseaForLife32 commented: 'Pretty Extraordinary that a 'Finished' Willian has played only 70 mins in the Prem this Season and has more assists then 90% of our Attackers.'

@abrabor said: 'Willian has more goals contribution than Mount this seasons he has only played 60 minutes …'

@JunhoPatrice similarly put: 'Willian matched Kai Havertz 22-23 G+A tally in two games.'

Chelsea fans- is it worrying that Willian has done more for Fulham than any Blues attacker bar Raheem Sterling has done so far in 2022/23? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below!
