Fuel VAT down, but pressure on Maharashtra govt to give more relief

MUMBAI: A day after the central government cut excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 8 and Rs 6 respectively, the state government’s value added tax (VAT), which is levied on an ad valorem (according to value) basis, automatically reduced by Rs 2.08 and Rs 1.44 per litre of petrol and diesel from Sunday.

This will lead to an estimated loss of around Rs 2,500 crore a year to the exchequer. The reduction in VAT will bring down the state’s revenue by Rs 80 crore per month in the case of petrol and Rs 125 crore a month for diesel.
