FTSE 100 buoyed by gains for mining stocks

Stock prices in London closed higher on Tuesday, the penultimate day of the year, as gains for mining shares strengthened the blue chip index.

The FTSE 100 Index closed up 74.18 points, 0.8%, at 9,940.71.
