If you’ve purchased sneakers or apparel from GOAT and paid extra for faster shipping, an unexpected check or PayPal payment may be legitimate. The Federal Trade Commission announced on October 6 that it is sending more than $100,000 to 6,205 consumers affected by alleged deceptive shipping and refund practices at the online marketplace. The payments follow earlier refunds GOAT provided as part of a settlement resolving allegations that some customers didn’t receive the shipping speeds or refund protections they had been promised. Consumers receiving checks have 90 days to cash them, while PayPal recipients have 30 days to accept their payments. With refund scams common, however, recipients should also know how to verify that a payment really came from the FTC before responding to any message about money.
