Frustration at 'nightmare' Basford junction plagued by 'impatient drivers' and traffic

Drivers have labelled a busy junction plagued by impatient motorists beeping their horns a 'nightmare'. Locals have spoken of their frustration with the five-way junction where the A6514 Western Boulevard/Valley Road meets with Church Street, Vernon Road, and Radford Road in Basford, citing build ups of traffic and angry drivers.

A busy McDonald's is located on the junction where Radford Road and Valley Road meet. And drivers said there were often issues with impatient motorists.

Paco Igulo, 40, who works as a Just Eat driver, said: "It's worst when it's school time. There's a lot of shouting between people that are driving, there's always accidents when people turn onto Vernon Road.

"You have to cross each other and it's always busy so it's sometimes too much. It annoys some people quite a bit I think, everybody driving through is always in a rush."

Ricky Bailey, 32, a joiner from Basford, said: "It is always a nightmare because it's always too busy with people coming from the ring road as well.

"The traffic lights don't let enough people through for drivers I don't think, so people kick off when two cars get through. You get quite a lot of people honking at each other for getting in the way - it is terrible."

The area could soon get even busier, with a number of new developments on Radford Road progressing. A £3.7m PDSA pet hospital is reaching completion and, in May, 114 build-to-rent homes were approved for the Former British Gas Works Site neighbouring it.

Steve Atkinson, 69, who lives in Strelley but previously lived in Basford, said: "It's a nightmare because going out of the junction towards Bulwell you get about two cars through the lights. You get a build up of cars and then people start to get frustrated and impatient.

"It's so busy, all the way through the day with people going in and out. There's always a lot of honking and noise from drivers trying to get through."
