Frustration as more A52 roadworks for Radcliffe on Trent after village hit by delays for 8 months

Frustrated residents in Radcliffe on Trent have spoken out after it was confirmed more road works were on the way for the A52 after a series of upgrades over the last eight months,

A four week programme will take place to carry out repairs to the A52 between Lees Barn Road and Golf road from Monday February 21. It will be closed from Monday to Friday, between 8pm to 6am

The works will create a new quieter road surface along with new road markings and road studs.

It will also include repairs to wiring underneath the road used to operate traffic signals.

People living on Harewood Close, off Golf Road told Nottinghamshire Live they fear the works could cause traffic to cut through the village.

Resident Angela Alcock, 43, who is an artist, says the works aren’t ideal, adding: "It will mean that there’s more traffic at night time (on Golf Road).

“They will just be cutting through - so this will be busier at night time.

“It will be really busy because actually that road is usually really busy at night time - we can hear it.

“Now it’s all going to be travelling up here.

“I can’t imagine it’s going to be very good.

“It’s going to be worse for the homes on that stretch - the road is going to be closed where their driveway is.

“It’s not ideal is it?

“It’s not ideal but it is what it is.

“We’ve had it right outside our house and now they’ll be doing stuff at night time.

“It is what it is but I would rather not have it - but what can we do?”

A series of roadworks have been carried out on the A52 in the Radcliffe on Trent area over the last year. There has been improvements to Nottingham Road and Cropwell Road junctions in Radcliffe-on-Trent. Highways England also carried out utility works on the stretch of road last year - casing heavy traffic and delays, and work has also been carried out at the Bingham Road junction.

Di Davies, 75, who is retired, said they are used to roadworks in the area and these new repairs could cause some noise.

“I suppose we are a bit used to it here,” she said.

“We had a letter with a full description of what they're doing and how long it’s going to take.

“The only thing I can potentially see being a problem is the noise when they’re taking the tarmac off - that’s going to be a noisy job.

“The Bingham Road junction was closed all of last summer whilst they were doing the utility works and they soon had it open - but from then on they started the road improvement works and that’s going to go on until the end of March.

“So it’s going to be 12 months of work that has affected us.”

Another resident that didn’t want to be named, said she was worried about the diversion put in place so that traffic doesn’t run through the village.

She said: “I don’t understand or know what the diversions would be put in place.

“Obviously with the big lorries and stuff - I’m assuming they can’t come up this road because there is no way it would fit.

“I don’t know if there is diversions being signposted - I guess down at before you get to the the RSPCA I assume hopefully they are doing some sort of a diversion there.

“Rather than sending all the traffic through the village - that was my main frustration.

“8pm is quite early to cut it off.

“I also sort of appreciate that some of it will be quite noisy and they would want to do it before midnight - so there’s a balance I guess.

“It does seem like a long time for it to be shut for four weeks.”

The diversion route will take motorists through Radcliffe on Trent and onto Cropwell Road or Golf Road.

National Highways Project Manager, Jon Pumfrey said: “We understand the concerns of local residents and that is why we’re working overnight when there are fewer vehicles using the road. The diversion routes that we have put in place have been agreed by the local authority and we’d encourage motorists to follow the signage to help keep them moving and disruption to a minimum.”

County Councillor Roger Upton of the Radcliffe on Trent division said: “There is arguably never a good time to carry out major road works, but the surface of this section of the A52 is deteriorating badly and now seems to be the best time to replace it whilst the major alteration works at the Bingham road junction are being completed.

“They’re working overnight so there is less disruption to traffic but there will be some disturbance to local residents especially when the existing road surface is removed and this is why an 8pm start is proposed with a 4 week programme.

“There will be a diversion through Radcliffe on Trent and onto Cropwell Road or Golf Road.

“This is a major 1.5m investment by National Highways in a road in my Radcliffe on Trent division and I welcome this investment.”

The road closure will incorporate the Cropwell Road A52 junction, but National Highways will try to keep this junction open as much as possible, allowing access between Radcliffe on Trent and the A46.

However, there will be several nights where this junction will need to also be closed for the safety of the team and the public.
