'Frustrated' Newcastle star reveals 'repetitive' training ground reaction to Liverpool 'poor finish'

Callum Wilson admits he has worked on a particular finish 'repetitively' ahead of the Carabao Cup final following a saved one-on-one in the defeat to Liverpool. The Newcastle United number nine was introduced as a second-half substitute in the home loss to the Reds, and was denied by Alisson as Eddie Howe's side looked to halve the deficit.

The defeat means the Magpies have now dropped to fifth in the Premier League table, with Liverpool becoming the first side to taste victory at St James' Park this term. Jurgen Klopp's team are still the only side to beat Newcastle in a top-flight fixture, having secured a controversial 2-1 win at Anfield in August.

Alexander Isak started up front for the second week in a row following a recent injury setback for Wilson. The former Bournemouth striker was asked whether Alisson made the one-one-one harder, but he focused more on his own actions as to why he did not find the back of the net.

He told the BBC's Footballer's Football Podcast: "He made a few good saves in the first half, I think he tipped one on to the bar and he saved one from Almiron. For me, my opportunity that he saved, I would look at myself than saying it was a great save from him, albeit he's spread and caught it on his leg.

"He was on me quick, but I've still got to finish that. For me, that finish has been worked on this week repetitively as you can imagine because I was frustrated. It was late on in the game, it's difficult when you come on as a sub but nevertheless, that save there was more a poor finish from myself."
