Frustrated Dumfries and Galloway driver claims potholes in rural areas forgotten about

An Annandale driver has voiced her frustration that no action is being taken to fix a plague of potholes blighting local roads.

And Freda Yates has questioned why she needs to pay road tax for her car when it’s virtually impossible to drive near her home at Johnstonebridge.

She said the number of potholes near the former village hall has given drivers pain trying to get in and out of the village.

“I went out to take photos of the potholes and a couple were going past and they struggled to get through them in their car. It’s not just me,” she said.

“It’s very precarious.

“Someone will damage a wheel or their whole car.

“It’s really shocking and I’m really annoyed because I pay my road tax every year and it’s clearly not getting used on the rural roads. This is a rural area they should know these roads are being used.

“It’s getting to the point where I can’t travel on that road it’s so bad.

“When I try to avoid them on the left side of the road there’s potholes on the right side. A few weeks ago I got stuck on the grass verge trying to avoid them and I eventually managed to get the car out but the situation is absolutely shocking.”

The auxiliary nurse contacted the council who said defects had “previously been identified and added to a future programme of works for repair” but couldn’t provide a timescale for it to be carried out.

She added: “I emailed the council and councillor Lynne Davis got in touch and went and looked and said they were terrible.

“The council said they looked at it on April 6 but basically they need to concentrate on the A roads and main roads. I find that completely unacceptable.”

The council response added: “While we are unable to provide a timescale for repair, please be advised that regular inspections are carried out on all outstanding repairs to monitor the severity of the defect.

“In the event a defect becomes a severe risk this will then be prioritised for repair in line with our statutory obligations.”
