2023 Golden Globe Awards: How to watch and the big names to look out for

The 80th Golden Globe awards are almost here — hoping to welcome a star-studded group of nominees – after years of controversy. Will they attend? So far, it looks like it.

After scandal and boycott put the spotlight on the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) and knocked its annual award show off television last year, the Golden Globes are back for its 2023 broadcast.

Here's your guide to the 80th annual Golden Globes awards ceremony.

When and how to watch

Stan has acquired the exclusive Australian rights to the 2023 Golden Globe Awards, broadcasting live on Wednesday 11 January.

  • Red carpet arrivals begin at 11am AEDT
  • Winners will be announced from noon AEDT

The Globes are usually the highest-profile awards next to the Oscars. The Golden Globes celebrates both the small and big screen in separate categories.

Who and what are some of the big names to look out for?

Australian nominees include Cate BlanchettMargot RobbieHugh JackmanBaz Luhrmann and Elizabeth Debicki.

Nominees Jamie Lee Curtis and Ana de Armas are also tapped to present, along with celebrities Tracey Morgan, and Quentin Tarantino.

James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water scored nods for both best film, drama, and best director. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever snagged two nominations for Angela Bassett's supporting performance and pop star Rihanna's ballad Lift Me Up.

Babylon, yet to be released, has five nominations, including nods for Robbie, Brad Pitt and Diego Calva.

While enthusiastic statements and social-media reactions often follow Golden Globe nominations, only a handful of nominees — including Rihanna, Kevin Costner and Hugh Jackman — publicly celebrated.

And Brendan Fraser, a best actor nominee, has said he won't attend the Globes after stating he was groped in 2003 by Philip Berk, a former HFPA member and former president. Berk disputed the allegation.

Here are the Golden Globe nominees in all categories.

Eddie Murphy to receive Cecil B. DeMille award

The honorary Golden Globe Award is a prize for lifetime achievement.

Murphy has been nominated for a Globe six times before, winning once, for his performance in Dreamgirls.

Previous honourees include Tom Hanks, Oprah Winfrey and Meryl Streep.

Ryan Murphy — the 16-time Golden Globe nominee and 'Glee' creator — will receive the Carol Burnett Award, the television equivalent of the Cecil B. DeMille Award.

Who will host the Golden Globes?

Comedian Jerrod Carmichael will host the show at the Beverly Hilton hotel.

Golden Globes mired in controversy, can it return to its former lustre?

Known for its boozy, celebrity-stuffed broadcast, the HFPA has historically been derided — sometimes even by their own hosts — for less diverse nominees.

Many studios and A-list celebrities have had little-to-no engagement with the event's organisers after sustained criticism about its lack of diversity and accepting gifts from prospective nominees.

On a one-year deal with NBC, the Globes are attempting to make a comeback after the Los Angeles Times investigation and a history of ethical indiscretions.

Many stars and studios said they would boycott the show, and NBC cancelled last year's broadcast.

Ratings for the Globes, long ranked as one of the most-watched non-sporting live programs of the year, have recently slid. The 2021 show was watched by 6.9 million, down from 18 million in 2020.
