From Player of the Year to Australia - what happened to Bristol City's 2021/22 released players

Bristol City confirmed Callum O'Dowda was among five players to be released from the club following the expiration of their contracts at the end of June.

The senior midfielder, who was at Ashton Gate for six years, joined youngsters Louis Britton, Barney Soady, Nathaniel Williams and Khari Allen in the fellow City players who won't have their deals extended.

It will be the catalyst of a summer of change at the club with manager Nigel Pearson preparing to build a squad capable of challenging in the top half of the table and beyond.

With a new era set to take shape with the expected arrival of Mark Sykes from Oxford, what happened to the players who were released at the end of last season with Pearson handed the first real opportunity to put his own stamp on the side?

A total of 11 players left the club including big names in Famara Diedhiou and Jamie Paterson while others went abroad, into coaching and faced relegation.

Hakeeb Adelakun

Leaving Bristol City after three years having made eight first team appearances, the winger signed for Lincoln City in July.

He made his debut on the opening day of the season and the 25-year-old went on to make 10 starts in League One and a further 13 substitute appearances, scoring twice and assisting twice.

Lincoln endured a difficult campaign, finishing 17th overall with manager Michael Appleton eventually leaving the club. They are now in the market for a new manager. Reports in Lincolnshire Live claim Adelakun could be one of the names up for sale as they look to raise transfer revenue.

Nathan Baker

Originally released, the centre-back performed a U-turn by signing a new two-year extension until the summer of 2023. Baker's season has been cruel, unfortunately seriously hampered by two concussion injuries.

He was hospitalised following a serious concussion picked up in a collision against Sheffield United in late November, just over a month following a similar incident against West Brom.

Baker missed the rest of the season and will further undergo tests to determine whether he will play a role in the side next campaign.

Jack Hunt

The right-back rejoined former club Sheffield Wednesday, signing a one-year deal and became an integral figure in their season making 46 appearances in total.

The Owls finished fourth but were knocked out of the play-offs to Sunderland in the first-leg, leaving Hunt to consider his future. With his contract expiring and no deal yet to be agreed, he recently hinted he could be moving on with the message on Instagram: "Thoroughly enjoyed my time coming back to @swfc unfortunately we failed to achieve what we set out to achieve!! Now my time is focused on being with my family and enjoying some rest. Thank you for your support this season JH32"

Famara Diédhiou

A City fan favourite who they were reluctantly forced to release on a free transfer having failed to come to terms over a deal. Diedhiou later signed for Turkish Super Lig side Alanyaspor on a four-year deal.

Diedhiou scored 11 goals during the season including four goals in his last five matches. Alanyaspor are one place away from a Europa League Conference qualifier with one match remaining.

His career peaked in February when he helped guide Senegal to a historic Africa Cup of Nations victory for the first time in their history. He also played his part in helping Senegal qualify for the World Cup later this year in Qatar.

Rene Gilmartin

The 34-year-old goalkeeper hung up his gloves after leaving Bristol City last summer. He initially joined Swindon as assistant manager to John McGreal, reuniting from when the pair were at Colchester.

Gilmartin then left after just three weeks alongside McGreal with the duo stating they "we are not able to carry out our duties as manager and assistant manager."

Gilmartin then joined Ipswich in December on McGreal's appointment as interim manager where he has remained as the club's Head of Goalkeeping.

Henri Lansbury

Lansbury was almost immediately signed by Luton following the expiration of his contract and he has proved important to the club's surprise season under Nathan Jones where they ended the season in sixth.

The 31-year-old has started 19 Championship games, including in the play-off semi-final first leg against Huddersfield and came off the bench a further 16 times. He failed to score or assist in the league this season and his contract expires in June leaving his future beyond the season uncertain.

Adrian Mariappa

The veteran 35-year-old defender left Ashton Gate following his short spell with the club and made the surprise move to the Australian national league with Macarthur FC.

Mariappa has played 19 times for the side in 26 league appearances, where they finished seventh in the league behind Wellington Phoenix. He became the first Jamaican player to play in the Australian A-League and is currently playing under new boss Dwight Yorke.

Jamie Paterson

The forward left Ashton Gate after five years with Pearson imposing significant changes both on and off the field. Paterson was one of the casualties and later signed for Championship rivals Swansea.

Paterson, 30, had an impressive campaign scoring nine goals and assisting 11 in 38 Championship appearances. He's been a favourite in Wales and is likely to continue being a key player under Russell Martin next season with one year left on his deal.

Tommy Rowe

After leaving City, Rowe re-joined Doncaster Rovers, the club where he spent four years before heading to BS3. The 33-year-old was a key figure for the side in their dismal relegation campaign, making 42 starts.

Rowe was crowned the Rovers' Player of the Year at the club's football awards last month and will look to play his part in helping guide the side back to League Two after they finished third from bottom.

Liam Walsh

Like Paterson, Walsh left Bristol City and headed to Swansea where he made five Championship appearances before joining Hull City on loan in January.

The midfielder, 24, continued struggling for game time making just three appearances for the Tigers. Hull opted against making the move permanent and Walsh has returned to his parent club where his future is likely to be assessed.

Walsh, who has a contract until 2024, could move on from Wales over the summer if his future is not reassured.

Marley Watkins

The 31-year-old forward left Bristol City after three years and later joined Cardiff on a short-term one month deal. Watkins featured just once, in an EFL Cup victory over Sutton where he scored twice and later joined Aberdeen in August where he signed a two-year contract.

Watkins played 21 times for the Scottish side, scoring three goals as Aberdeen finished the season in 10th.
