From Netflix's First Original Telenovela to Telemundo's New Hospital: Who Moved to Miami for 'Emergencias. Unidad de Vida'?

MIAMI - The Spanish language TV world has a new television hospital, and its emergency room is crowded with actors arriving from some of the biggest telenovelas and streaming hits of the moment.

Telemundo officially began filming Emergencias. Unidad de Vida at its studios in South Florida, recruiting Ana Brenda Contreras, Erick Elías, Geraldine Bazán, Rodolfo Salas and a particularly timely addition: David Palacio, fresh from starring in La mujer prohibida, Netflix's first original Spanish-language telenovela.

The Colombian actor played singer Miguel López in the romantic thriller, opposite Valerie Domínguez and Rodrigo Candamil. The production, which premiered globally on Netflix in July, mixed forbidden love, political corruption and an attempted murder. Its arrival placed Palacio in front of an international streaming audience just before he packed his scrubs for Telemundo.

La mujer prohibida is the story of a politician's wife who is rescued from an assassination attempt by a famous singer, setting off an affair surrounded by power and corruption. Palacio's leap from its leading love triangle to a major Miami production makes him one of the most intriguing names in the new Telemundo ensemble.

He is hardly the only cast member arriving with momentum.

Ana Brenda Contreras will lead Emergencias. Unidad de Vida as Gabriela Serrano, a brilliant and determined medical resident who returns to Florida and walks straight into two emergencies. One is professional, involving a hospital fighting for its future. The other is deeply personal, as Gabriela must confront the complicated family history she left behind.

The Texas-born, Mexico-raised actress returns to Telemundo after playing Mariana Zambrano opposite Fernando Colunga in El Conde: Amor y Honor. Before that, she crossed successfully into English-language television as Cristal Jennings in The CW's Dynasty, while remaining one of the best-known telenovela protagonists of her generation thanks to La que no podía amar, Corazón indomable and Lo imperdonable.

The hospital setting is not entirely new for Contreras. She previously appeared in Médicos, línea de vida as Alejandra Ponce, carrying her lawyer character from Por amar sin ley into the medical drama's fictional universe.

Rodolfo Salas, another Venezuelan actor building a career between traditional television and streaming, knows that same hospital world even better. He was part of the main cast of Médicos, línea de vida before appearing in Betty en NY and becoming a Netflix favorite through Fake Profile. In other words, Salas will not need anyone to explain where the cameras usually hide in a fictional operating room.

Erick Elías is not exactly moving to Miami for the production. The Mexican actor has been based in the city with his family and has an extensive history with Telemundo, beginning with Gitanas more than two decades ago. He later appeared in El cuerpo del deseo and El Zorro, la espada y la rosa before returning to lead two of the network's most recognizable modern productions, Betty en NY and 100 días para enamorarnos.

The ensemble also gives Telemundo two high-profile returns. Elizabeth Gutiérrez, the Los Angeles-born actress of Mexican heritage who led El rostro de Analía and El fantasma de Elena, is back in a major scripted production for the network. Geraldine Bazán, whose Telemundo history includes Tierra de pasiones, Dueños del paraíso and Falsa identidad, also joins the hospital drama.

Laura Flores brings several generations of telenovela viewers with her. The Mexican actress and singer has moved comfortably between Televisa classics and U.S. Spanish-language productions, including Reina de corazones and Señora Acero. Arturo Peniche, another pillar of Mexican melodrama, will make a special appearance after a career that includes María Mercedes, La usurpadora and En nombre del amor.

Ana Belena and Mónica Dionne add more Mexican star power, while Luis Ernesto Franco, familiar to streaming viewers through Ingobernable and Fake Profile, has what Telemundo is billing as a stellar performance rather than a special appearance.

The wider cast brings its own collection of fan bases. Colombian actor Jerónimo Cantillo arrives after playing Dixon in Netflix's Rebelde. Pepe Gámez became an even more familiar face to Telemundo viewers through La casa de los famosos. Ecuadorian-American singer and actor Johann Vera adds a musical following, while Gloria Aura, Elena Medina, Miguel Ferreira, Paola Fernández, Vince Miranda, Roberto Mateos, Gloria Peralta, Emma Ramos, Sebastián Silva and Sara Linares complete the ensemble.

The timing is hardly accidental. Medical dramas are having another television surge because they deliver two kinds of adrenaline at once. A new emergency can begin and end in a single episode, while romances, betrayals and family secrets keep bleeding into the next one. Streaming services have embraced the formula internationally, and Telemundo is now giving it a distinctly U.S. Hispanic setting.

"We're thrilled to officially kick off production of Emergencias. Unidad de Vida, a powerful new story with such an extraordinary cast and creative team," said Javier Pons, chief content officer and head of Telemundo Studios.

Pons said the series will combine "the intensity of the medical world with relationships and themes that speak to the experiences and emotions of the Hispanic audience."

Written by Carlos Eloy Castro and directed by Nicolás Di Blasi and Luis Sierra, the drama is executive produced by Pons, Jacky Castro and Martha Godoy. Telemundo has not announced a premiere date or revealed which characters most of the actors will play.

What is already clear is that Emergencias. Unidad de Vida is not merely another doctors-in-love telenovela. It is a meeting point between classic melodrama, Miami television and the new streaming star system, where an actor can leave Netflix's newest global romance and report almost immediately for duty at Telemundo's next emergency room.
