From cancer survivors to surfing stars: California woman and her dog beat cancer before competing together at the World Dog Surfing Championships

A California woman and her beloved Miniature Pinscher have become an inspiration after overcoming one of life's toughest challenges and returning to do what they love most together. Sophia Sadlowski, from Huntington Beach, California, and her dog Rusty, both survived cancer before competing side by side at the 2026 World Dog Surfing Championships held at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica, California. Although they did not win the competition, their remarkable journey captured the hearts of spectators and highlighted the extraordinary bond between humans and their pets. Their appearance proved that resilience, determination and companionship can be just as memorable as standing on the winners' podium. Their story quickly became one of the event's most celebrated moments, reminding many that courage is measured not only by victory but also by the determination to keep going.
