From Airports to Voter Rolls, Trump Policies Draw 'Handmaid's Tale' Comparisons as ICE Deploys Nationwide

On the same day that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents began arriving at airports across the United States, a viral post on X drew a sharp parallel that gained significant online attention: a clip from 'The Handmaid's Tale', in which a character named Emily is stopped at an airport by armed officers who declare her marriage certificate invalid before separating her from her family. The post, shared by commentator Ed Krassenstein, had accumulated more than 260,000 views by Monday morning, and read: 'As Trump sends ICE to airports in America today, and as he pushes to force women to show marriage certificates to get a voter ID when they change their names, let's remember that this happened in an Episode of The Handmaid's Tale.'

The timing made the post land with particular force. On Sunday, President Donald Trump confirmed ICE agents would be deployed to American airports beginning Monday, placing border czar Tom Homan in charge of the effort. Separately, the Trump-backed SAVE America Act — which passed the House in February — remains before the Senate. Under the bill's provisions, women who have changed their names after marriage could be required to present a marriage certificate alongside a birth certificate and photo ID in order to register to vote, according to the Bipartisan Policy Centre.
