The age-adjusted breast cancer death rate in Washington, D.C., reached 24.1 per 100,000 women in 2024, the highest of any state or D.C. and about 67% higher than Rhode Island's rate of 14.4, the lowest. The figures come from a CDC data table on female breast cancer deaths released with the Oct. 15 issue of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report and based on final 2024 death records from the National Center for Health Statistics.
Nationwide, 43,402 women died of breast cancer in 2024, for an age-adjusted rate of 18.7 per 100,000. Because the rates are adjusted for age, a state with an older population does not automatically rank worse.
