Tuesday night’s Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl clash between UTSA and Marshall featured an intriguing matchup consisting of the sons of a pair of former NFL quarterbacks.
The quarterback duel at the Frisco Bowl was enough to make most football fans wonder where the years went, as the sons of Chad Pennington and Josh McCown took to the field in search of bowl game glory.
Pennington’s son, Cole, is a true freshman for the Thundering Herd. He drew the start following the departure of Cam Fancher, who entered the transfer portal after the end of the regular season. Tuesday’s game marks Pennington’s fourth appearance of the season.
As for McCown, also a freshman, he’s made appearances in five games this year and earned his first start amid an injury to regular starter Frank Harris, who is inactive for the bowl game.

The senior Pennington enjoyed an 11-year career in the NFL, playing for the Jets and Dolphins from 2000-10. He’s now been out of the league for 13 years.
As for McCown, Josh was in the NFL as recently as ’19, having made his debut back in ’02. He featured for a slew of teams in the pros, making 76 career starts.
While football fans were certainly intrigued by the matchup between the sons of Pennington and McCown, many couldn’t help but admit they feel incredibly old watching the next generation of quarterback play.
