Friends desperately tried to save boxer, 16, who drowned in river

Friends of a teenage boxer "who could not swim" desperately tried to save him before he drowned in a river.

Frank Varey, 16, died in the River Dee in Chester after he tried to swim from one side of the river to the other with friends on July 22 last year, an inquest at Warrington Coroner's Court was told on Wednesday. Frank was with his friends, enjoying the sun at a pontoon near The Moorings, reports Cheshire Live.

Witness statements read out at the inquest said the group had been jumping in the water to "keep cool". Then some of the friends, including Frank, decided to swim across the river to the other side.
