Strike action suspended after trade union recommends pay offer for council workers
A trade union has agreed to suspend strike action after a revised pay offer for council workers was tabled.
GMB Scotland has recommended a new offer to members that came from talks chaired by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.
A fresh wave of strikes next week was set to close schools and result in unemptied bins after a previous round of industrial action last month.
COSLA, which represents councils, has been in dispute with the GMB, Unison and Unite unions for months over pay but the local authority group made an offer today that could be accepted.
Fears of rise in hooliganism at Scottish football matches as cost of living crisis worsens
Ex First Minister Henry McLeish fears the cost of living crisis will fuel a surge in hooliganism at top flight football matches.
Police were called to deal with incidents following Scottish Premiership and Championship games last weekend. Former Scottish Labour leader McLeish is concerned the violence is a sign of things to come as people struggle to cope with crippling economic pressures.
His warning comes as fans’ group chief Andy Smith urged supporters to be on their best behaviour amid concerns social unrest will spread to the terraces of football grounds. McLeish, hired by the SFA to investigate the state of football in Scotland in 2010, said "people could be seeking outlets for their anger and sadly one of them could be football".
'Paralytic' Ryanair passenger escorted off Scots flight after 'threatening' air steward
Outrageous footage has emerged of a 'paralytic' woman being escorted off a Ryanair flight bound for Scotland after allegedly telling an air steward that she would 'put her in hospital'.
A passenger on the flight from Alicante to Aberdeen yesterday said the woman had become drunk and abusive to both their partner and also airline staff.
Video shows the allegedly rowdy passenger appearing to try and reason with cabin crew staff who are trying to diffuse the situation.
Scots bar admits security failed to give further assistance to woman 'spiked' and dumped on street
A Scots bar has admitted security staff failed to give further assistance to a woman who was allegedly spiked and dumped outside the venue. The woman was celebrating her friend's 30th birthday at arcade bar NQ64, in Glasgow, and began feeling unwell after one drink on Saturday, August 27.
She claims security staff dragged her outside alone despite her being unable to stand and drifting in and out of consciousness, and refused to call an ambulance.
A spokesperson for NQ64 confirmed they have since reviewed CCTV footage and have changed their door security as a result of the investigation. They also said additional training will be provided for staff.
Full list of cost of living payments due to be issued between September and Christmas
Cost of living payments will provide a much-needed boost to millions of households across the UK between now and the end of the year to help combat soaring energy bills, rising inflation and ever-increasing prices on food and petrol.
More than 7.2 million people have already received the first instalment of the £650 means-tested cost of living payment from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) with the second payment for £324 due to land in accounts this autumn - no dates have been announced yet.
People claiming Working Tax Credit or Child Tax Credit from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC)and no other means-tested benefit from DWP, will receive their payment of £326 between Friday, September 2 and Wednesday, September 7, with the second round of support due to be made in the winter.
