Fresh footage of Lionel Messi and Manchester United's Wout Weghorst row emerges

A World Cup row between Lionel Messi and now Manchester United loanee Wout Weghorst has again returned to the fore as fresh footage of their altercation has resurfaced.

The incident happened inside the bowels of the Lusail Stadium after Argentina knocked the Netherlands out in the quarter-finals following a penalty shootout. Messi had put the World Cup winners 2-0 up during the second half before substitute Weghorst scored two late goals to take the game to extra time.

Argentina's captain would have the last laugh by scoring the opening penalty of the shootout as Holland missed the first two they took to decide the tempestuous match featuring 14 yellow cards and one red. Tempers also flared in the tunnel as Messi had some choice words for the soon-to-be United striker.

"What are you looking at? What are you looking at? Get out of here, fool," the Paris Saint-Germain player interrupted a post-match interview to shout at Weghorst, who stares and waits for Messi. The Argentina star walks away with his arm around teammate Rodrigo de Paul as Weghorst approaches, ignoring the centre-forward's outstretched arm.

Another clip shows the Netherlands international explaining to a group of opposition players that he was waiting to shake Messi's hand, calling the snub disrespectful. Future teammate Lisandro Martinez then pushes the striker away in the opposite direction to de-escalate the situation.

Messi spoke about the situation in January. "Everything that came out was natural; a lot had happened on the field with that player in reality and a couple more," he told Infobae.

"At the moment of tension, friction, crossing, when the game gets like that, the fever with the referee too. He was in the mixed zone, and the game had just finished. And well, I know that there is everything now."
