Fresh Covid case count shows fluctuating trend in West Bengal

KOLKATA: Stray Covid cases have been reported in recent weeks though almost all of them have been mild, said CMRI Hospital pulmonology director Raja Dhar. "Other viruses are more common now but Covid persists, albeit in a mild form. These deaths indicate that we need to be on guard, especially in the wake of a spurt in some other states," said Dhar.

Prior to last month, Bengal had recorded no Covid death between April 7 and 22. The sharp drop in mortality was hailed as a positive sign by doctors, who still advised caution. The positivity rate had been swinging between 0.2% to 0.7% since the beginning of March and the number of daily positive cases restricted to double digits since the second week of March. The number of monthly deaths started climbing down to single digits from April.

While April saw only four deaths, there were three deaths in May.

Fresh cases in Bengal crossed 50 on Thursday after 18 days to touch 57 but fell to 42 on Friday and 31 on Saturday, indicating a fluctuating trend over the last month. On Wednesday, there were just 27 cases.
