Frequent Exhaustion Turns Up Most Often in Adults Under Thirty-Five in New National Health Survey Data

Nearly three-quarters of American adults reported feeling very tired or exhausted at least some days over a three-month period, and the group reporting it most often is not the one most people would guess. Adults ages 18 to 34 had the highest rate of frequent fatigue at 19.5 percent, while adults 65 and older had the lowest at 12.9 percent.

The figures come from a new report released by the National Center for Health Statistics, drawn from the 2024 National Health Interview Survey and based on 31,917 adults who gave a valid response to the fatigue question. Authors Natalie A.E. Young, Julie D. Weeks, and Nazik Elgaddal write that the report offers an unusual look at fatigue symptoms that are not tied to a specific diagnosis, an approach that avoids excluding people whose fatigue is unexplained or whose underlying condition has not been identified.
