French virtuoso to perform for HRH Princess Sirivannavari's birthday

French virtuoso cellist Gautier Capuçon will be flown into the Kingdom to join the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra in a royal concert held to mark the birthday of HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, the patron of the RBSO.

The "Gautier Capuçon Plays Walton Cello Concerto" concert will take place in the Main Hall of Thailand Cultural Centre, Ratchadaphisek Road, on Jan 11 at 8pm.

Written for the celebrated cellist Piatigorsky by British composer William Walton in 1956, Cello Concerto Op.68 is a powerful mixture of reserved English character and the more sunny Mediterranean influence of the picturesque Ischia -- his adopted dream home next to the perfect azure waters just off the coast of Naples, Italy.

Capuçon is a brilliant soloist and multiple award winner who finished his studies with the great soloist and pedagogue Heinrich Schiff at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.

He has recorded all the major works of the repertoire. His instrument is a fine Matteo Goffriller cello made in 1701, nicknamed "L'Ambassadeur". It is known for its deep sonority, a quality most appropriate for the Walton concerto.

The concert will open with the famous William Tell Overture, known for its passionate opening cello section solo and a rousing finale, also known as March Of The Swiss Soldiers.

Also featured in the programme will be Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, one of the finest orchestral showpieces. Conducting the orchestra for the piece, which features one of the most imposing concertmaster solos in the repertoire, will be maestro Michel Tilkin.

Tickets cost 1,000, 1,600, 2,400, 3,200 and 4,000 baht (half prices for students and seniors aged 60 and above) and can be purchased from Thai Ticket Major outlets (visit thaiticketmajor.com or call 02-262-3456).

Call RBSO Office on 02-255-6617/8 or 02-255-9191/2.
