French police fire tear gas to disperse protest in Lyon

French police fired tear gas to disperse around 150 protesters gathered outside Lyon 3 University on Saturday, 24 October. The demonstration took place in an area where protests were banned, as tensions remain high across France following a weekend of unrest marked by clashes, arson and looting in several cities.

Authorities are seeking to avoid a repeat of the destruction that followed similar protests last weekend, with security measures tightened in areas where gatherings are prohibited.
