A FRENCH mayor has been tear-gassed after stepping between riot police and young protesters during mass demonstrations over conditions in the country's schools.

Bally Bagayoko, the left-wing mayor of Saint-Denis, intervened as tensions flared between police and demonstrators during a major march through Paris on Tuesday.
