French Foreign Ministry Summons Russian Ambassador Over NGO Workers' Deaths in Ukraine

Stéphane Séjourné Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of France

The French foreign ministry has taken a strong stance against Russia following the deaths of two French nationals working for humanitarian organizations in Ukraine. The ministry summoned Russia's ambassador to France on Monday to express its grievances over the incident.

The tragic incident occurred during Russian strikes near the front line of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, specifically in the region north of the Dnipro River. Along with the two fatalities, three other French nationals were wounded in the attacks. The French aid workers were based in the town of Beryslav in the southern Kherson region when the strikes occurred.

French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne took to social media to condemn the Russian strikes, posting on X (formerly known as Twitter) that 'Russian barbarity has targeted civilians in Ukraine... Russia will have to answer for its crimes.' This strong statement reflects the French government's grave concerns about the safety of its citizens working in war-torn regions.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who is scheduled to visit Kyiv in the coming weeks, also spoke out against the attack, labeling it as 'cowardly and outrageous.' These comments emphasize the seriousness with which France views the situation and underscores the need for a strong response.

In addition to addressing the deaths of the French humanitarian workers, the French foreign ministry also plans to denounce the resurgence of disinformation targeting France. This shows that the summoning of Russia's ambassador serves not only to express sorrow and anger over the loss of French lives but also to address broader concerns about misleading narratives.

France's strong stance against Russia highlights the gravity of the situation and the need for accountability. The French government is demanding answers from Russia regarding the deaths of its citizens and expects them to be held accountable for what it calls 'crimes.' The summoning of Russia's ambassador is just one step in a series of actions that France intends to take in response to these tragic events.

As the war in Ukraine continues to unfold, it is crucial for the international community to remain vigilant in condemning acts of violence and holding those responsible accountable for their actions. The loss of innocent lives, such as these French humanitarian workers, serves as a stark reminder of the human toll of war and the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to this ongoing conflict.
