French and American nuclear submarines have been pictured arriving at Faslane this week.
The US Virginia class and French Rubis were spotted berthing the naval base at Faslane (HMNB Clyde) just north of Glasgow.
According to the editor of UK Defence Journal, George Allison, it's the first time that nuclear submarines belonging to three western nations were in the same place at the same time in recent memory.
Faslane is home to the UK's own nuclear deterrent, including the Trident nuclear missile-carrying Vanguard-class nuclear submarines.
The reason for the visits is thought to be prosaic, with routine arrivals from these separate nations occurring regularly throughout the year.
Two massive Kaiser class replenishment vessels, the USNS Robert E Peary and USNS Patuxent, which act as fuel storage facilities for the US Navy and helicopters, also arrived in Hunterston.
The news comes as the first Irish naval visit to Scotland for over 10 years occurred in Scotland this week.
The LÉ George Bernard Shaw arrived in Glasgow and was met by representatives of the Royal Navy.
