A series of free family-friendly events will be coming to the Wirral this month.
Between September 9 and 18, over 60 venues and events across the Wirral peninisula will be opening their doors for free as part of a series of Heritage Open Days. The event which is co-ordinated by the National Trust with support from the People's Postcode Lottery, will allow visitors to see hidden spaces and try out new experiences. Locally, the festival has been organised by the Wirral History and Heritage Association since 2009, with support from Wirral Borough Council.
Some of the Wirral venues taking part include Birkenhead Priory, RSPB Burton, Melrose Hall, New Ferry Butterfly Park, Port Sunlight River Park and the National Waterways Museum. Those who visit one of the venues during the event can enjoy a range of activities including guided tours.

Paul Smith from the Wirral History and Heritage Association said: "It's the perfect opportunity to explore your local area free of charge, look behind the scenes or view things from a pirates point of view. Climb a church tower, join a history walk, sit in a vintage ariplane, make soap, explore holes, learn about submarines or vikings. Discover why the Wirral is such a special place.
"This heritage festival is designed to reveal fascinating and fun facts for all the family right on your doorstep. There are events involving hundreds of volunteers taking place indoors and outdoors everywhere. Check out the website or pick up a brochure. You might get hooked on history!"
The local Heritage Open Days listings including an online brochure can be found on the Wirral History and Heritage Assocation Website. Alternatively, you can pick up a printed brochure, which is available from local libraries, museums, venues and tourist information points.
